Joseph Pilates’ original 34 mat exercises laid the foundation for the method - but the evolution of matwork did not stop there. This session explores how second-generation Pilates elders and master teachers expanded upon the original work, introducing new exercises, transitions and progressions that deepened the system while still honouring its core principles. From Jay Grimes’ Thigh Stretch following Neck Pull, to Ron Fletcher’s Diamond Roll Back, Cathy Grant’s One-Legged Teaser and Mary Bowen’s Shoulder Bridge transitions, this workshop examines how these additions connect back to the original repertoire and why they became an important part of the living lineage of Pilates. Together, we’ll explore how the work continued to evolve and why understanding these contributions offers greater insight into the depth, continuity and future of matwork practice.
